Issue:

When you open a higher-version DWG drawing in a lower version of CAD, you may encounter messages like "Drawing file is not valid" or "This DWG file was created in a higher version."

How to check the format version of the DWG file?

Causes:

The current CAD version being used is lower than the version of the drawing format, which causes an issue in opening the drawing.

Solution:

Method 1:

Right-click on the DWG file, select Open with, and then choose Notepad from the menu.

When the Notepad program opens, look at the first line with AC**** to find the file format version.

The DWG file versions corresponding to the AC codes are as follows:

  • AC1015 corresponds to the 2000 DWG version.
  • AC1018 corresponds to the 2004 DWG version.
  • AC1021 corresponds to the 2007 DWG version.
  • AC1024 corresponds to the 2010 DWG version.
  • AC1027 corresponds to the 2013 DWG version.
  • AC1032 corresponds to the 2018 DWG version.

Method 2:

When you open a DWG file in the latest ZWCAD (ZWCAD 2024 supports the highest Autocad 2024 saved file, the highest CAD format is 2018 for ACAD 2024), the command bar will display information about the DWG file's version.
